International fine art auctions are among the most fascinating and glamorous events in the social calendar. A major sale has all the ingredients of high drama: tension and suspense as bidders battle for a coveted piece, sensation as price records are sent reeling, amazement as works of art unseen for decades or even centuries reappear in the saleroom. There is also a star cast of buyers and sellers, including the rich, the famous and the eccentric, and the intrinsic interest of the objects themselves, which range from the bizarre to the sublime.
As the world's oldest and largest fine art auctioneer, Sotheby's plays the major role in this intriguing market place. As the world's oldest and largest fine art auctioneer, Sotheby's plays the major role in this intriguing market place. Truly international in scope, it combines a strong New York and London base with major auction centres in Monaco, Switzerland and Hong Kong, and local sales in a ftu:ther nine countries. During the past year, Sotheby's has been host to some astounding works of art, including the jewels of the Duchess of Windsor, the autograph score of nine Mozart symphonies, and Van Gogh's Irises, the last of which fetched the highest price ever paid for a work of art at auction. A vast range of objects has passed through Sotheby's salerooms: a collection of photograph albums belonging to the Rtissian royal family; an outfit worn by Marilyn Monroe in the film Bus Stop-, John Gould's own collection of his celebrated bird books; a 1938 Bugatti that had been discovered in a derelict garage; the contents of the studio of René Magritte; a record-breaking Ming vase that had once been used as a bedside lamp; and thousands of other important paintings, pieces of jewellery, works of art and books.
Sotheby's Great Sales is a portrait of a year at Sotheby's as reflected in the highlights of the season's sales. It goes behind the scenes to reveal how a major auction house operates, giving the stories of some of the more spectacular discoveries, and showing why high prices are realized. Sumptuously illustrated in full colour throughout, it conveys the excitement and the glitter of the saleroom and the beauty and variety of thé objects sold.
