David Grove:
Hungary's unrivalled leisure resource
No European country can boast of greater reserves of natural warm water than Hungary. Thermal water lies under almost three-quarters of the national territory. A little of this water reaches the surface naturally in the form of warm springs, while the rest can be tapped simply by sinking wells to depths between 500 and 2,000 metres. To exploit this unrivalled natural wealth, a team of Hungarian specialists proposes the establishment of a network of thermal water resorts and ancillary facilities to meet the demands of Hungarians and foreigners seeking relaxation and therapy.
The author of this book, a British economist and international expert in physical planning, was commissioned by the United Nations. His aim has been to give a brief account of the planning studies for the development of recreation and tourism based on thermal water, carried out with UNDP assistance, and of the perspective, medium-term and pilot plans...
His aim has been to give a brief account of the planning studies for the development of recreation and tourism based on thermal water, carried out with UNDP assistance, and of the perspective, medium-term and pilot plans prepared during the Project.
The book is published simultaneously in Hungarian and English. It is intended to make widely known the extent of Hungary's thermal water resources and the steps being taken to plan
their use, and to alert everybody concerned with the tourism business to the opportunities arising from the implementation of the Project's recommendations. Development plans are presented in carefully selected maps and tables. Detailed proposals for individual resorts are illustrated by layout schemes that give special attention to the creation of an agreable, relaxing environment. The book concludes with these words: "This account of the Project's work is offered in the belief that it will have a lasting value both in Hungary and abroad. We hope the Project will long be remembered and consulted as a successful example of international technical cooperation through the United Nations and that it will serve as a model for more projects of a similar character."
DAVID GROVE studied Philosophy, Politics and Economics at Balliol College in the University of Oxford. He is a partner in the British consulting firm Shank-land Cox Partnership. He directed the firm's professional contribution to the United Nations South Adriatic and Upper Adriatic Projects in Jugoslavia. David Grove has also worked on tourism development and regional planning studies in the United Kingdom, the Caribbean, North and West Africa, and South East Asia. He is co-author (with László Huszár) of THE TOWNS OF GHANA: the role of service centres in regional planning.
