Europe s Environment: The Dobrís Assessment is the most detailed and comprehensive review available of the state of the environment in Europe. The report covers 46 countries - from Portugál in the west to The Urals in the east, and from Iceland in the north to Malta in the south - and is based on data from a wide rangé of sources, including UNECE, UNEP, OECD, Council of Europe, IUCN and WHO. Fully illustrated throughout, the report is clearly structured and its information easy to access. Divided into six parts, it: introduces the context and reporting techniques used in the report assesses the state of the environment in eight different fields, including air, water, soil, nature, wildlife and úrban areas; € describes the pressures, such as emissions and wastes, which affect the environment; examines the sources of environmental pressures arising from humán activities in eight different sectors (such as energy, transport, agriculture and tourism); analyses the 12 most pressing environmental problems facing European countries; and presents a summary of main highlights and responses documented in the report. Europe''s Environment was written in response to the first panEuropean environment ministers' conference held at Dobrís Castle near Prague in June 1991. The report fully vindicates the concerns expressed during the conference: it identifies a number of serious threats and confirms the poor quality of the environment in many parts of Europe. There is no room for complacency, and the transition to more sustainable development will involve Europe's policy makers in difficult decisions on a rangé of complex issues. This report makes an invaluable contribution to that process. The European Environment Agency was launched by the EU in 1993 with a mandate to orchestrate, cross-check and put to strategic use information relevant to the protection and improvement of Europe's environment.
