"Few, if any, trends are more important to our future than climate change caused by human activities. THE CHALLENGE OF GLOBAL WARMING is a gold mine of information on the single most important aspect of climate change."
Professor Paul R. Ehrlich Center for Conservation Biology Stanford, California
"Scientists around the world are warning us that global warming poses a major threat to our future quality of life, but previously there has been no good source of information on this problem. Now, THE CHALLENGE OF GLOBAL WARMING brings together the most current information on this problem, and the most effective courses of action. Should be high on the reading list of our public officials and concerned citizens."
Rep. Claudine C. Schneider (R-RI) House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology

THE CHALLENGE OF GLOBAL WARMING
"Humanity is conducting an unintended, uncontrolled, globally persuasive experiment whose ultimate consequences could be second only to nuclear war."
Conference on The Changing Atmosphere: Implications for Global Security Toronto, 1988
This warning—that global warming can no longer be ignored—comes from 300 leading international policymakers and scientists. Buried in scientific journals until relatively recently, global warming is now properly the focus of international debate and alarm. Experts have determined that even the smallest increase in the earth's temperature could cause a dramatic shift in weather patterns and raise sea levels—contaminating water supplies, wiping out wetlands, annihilating species, and ultimately changing life on earth.
ISLAND PRESS, in cooperation with the Natural Resources Defense Council, presents THE CHALLENGE OF GLOBAL WARMING—a response to the immediate need for the most current information about climate change. Public officials, environmentalists, students, and scientists who want to better understand the causes, probable effects, and responses to global warming will find this clear non-technical treatment invaluable. Here, in one volume, top environmental policy experts and scientists, including James Hansen, George Woodwell, Rafe Pomerance, Gordon MacDonald, and others, explain this phenomenon and present their recommendations for global action to counter this threat. Discussed are:
• Curbing the production of dangerous greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide and methane, which are primarily responsible for global warming.
(continued from front flap)
• Enforcement of existing international agreements designed to inhibit the use of ozone-depleting chlcro-fluorocarbons (CFCs).
• The options and responses legislators and policymakers must consider for the short and long term.
THE CHALLENGE OF GLOBAL WARMING is a thorough evaluation of where we stand now, what we must do to avert this burgeoning crisis, and why worldwide cooperation is the only answer.
Dean Edwin Abrahamson is professor of public affairs at the University of Minnesota's Hubert H. Humphrey institute for Public Affairs, co-chair of the university's Council on Environmental Quality, and a member of the board of the Natural Resources Defense Council. He holds degrees in physics, medicine, and anatomy, and is uniquely qualified for his work on the environmental and public health implications of energy policies. Dr. Abrahamson's focus over the last several years has been on policy implications of the greenhouse effect.
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a nonprofit membership organization dedicated to protecting America's natural resources and to improving the quality of the human environment. In 1988, NRDC launched the Atmospheric Protection Initiative, a comprehensive advocacy campaign to advance solutions to the worldwide crisis of atmospheric pollution. This project combines the efforts of twenty NRDC scientists and attorneys to address the risks posed by global warming, ozone depletion, acid rain, and urban smog. The strategy of the Initiative includes legal action, legislative advocacy, public education, and the creation of projects demonstrating new methods and technologies, which can use energy more efficiently, and thereby help stop air pollution.
