DEATH OF A DOCTOR
Gyula Fekete belongs to the post-war generation of Hungarian authors. Born into a family of peasants, he was educated at Sárospatak, in one of Hungary's oldest Calvinist colleges, which boasted an excellent English-language branch staffed by British tutors. He went to Budapest to study political economy, and while there, joined the Györffy College Student's Brotherhood, a leftist-oriented movement of students from the provinces, mostly of peasant stock. During the German occupation of Hungary (March 19, 1944 to April 4, 1945), he refused to do his military service. After the war, he flung himself wholeheartedly into politics and national reconstruction. Though a young man, he was appointed ministerial commissioner with powers to supervise the enforcement of the Land Reform in his county.
Subsequently, he organized farmers' cooperatives, and took on successivejobs as editor.
He has been writing fiction, by profession, since the early fifties; his literary interests include family, love, and moral problems. He was awarded a number of Hungarian literary prizes. At present, as a side-line, he is science editor on the staff of the weekly Élet és Irodalom (Life and Literature).
His artistic portrayal of the last days of the life of an old country doctor, who suffered persecution during the war, as well as the candid tone of his narrative, have made his novel Death of a Doctor a bestseller on the Hungarian book market.
