About this Born within a few years of Monet, Cézanne and Boo Ic Degas was a member of the school of painting
which emerged after 1850 from the ranks of the Paris bourgeoisie. Their works were to shock it so deeply that it was 60 years before recognition was really won. Without the spur of material hardship. Degas was driven by a sheer passion for painting. This lively study takes us through the artist's career, revealing the development of the remarkable creative impulses that lay beneath its superficially ordinary chain of events.
The revolutionary naturalism of Degas' early portraits was followed by the tense, incisive portrayals of thoroughbred horses and their world. The ballet, a kaleidoscope of moving limbs and colours ; the vulgarity of the café-concert ; women washing caught in unsparingly awkward poses, and drawn with a unique combination of power and delicacy; these were some of Degas' major subjects. His daring increased in the latter half of his life; far from despairing when his eyesight began to fail, he subordinated exactness of detail to a broad, vigorous line which enabled him to use his media—especially pastel—with unprecedented expressive force. Written with an infectious enthusiasm, enhanced by judicious quotation from contemporary sources, this intimate portrayal of Degas will appeal to a far wider audience than a mere detached analysis. It includes a wealth of illuminating detail on the artist's technique, and on the social environment in which he worked.
Jean Bouret born in 1914, became professor, and then an ethnologist in Paul Rivet's team at the Musée d'Homme. His love for primitive oceanic art aroused his interest in modern art. After the war, as a journalist, he argued for a new humanist art, and upheld a form of French expressionism, from Gromaire to Buffet. Among the works he has published are studies on Giotto, Fra Angélico and Rembrandt. He compiled the first catalogue of the Douanier Rousseau's work, and wrote the first important text on this painter to appear in both France and England. A work on Delacroix and another on the Bateau Lavoir are in preparation at the moment.
