'There is also a certain Michelangelo da Caravaggio, who is doing extraordinary
things in Rome----He is one who
thinks little of the works of other masters, but will not openly praise his own.'

'Some people thought that he had destroyed the art of painting Because of his excessively fearless nature [he] was quite a quarrelsome individual, and sometimes he looked for a chance to break his neck or jeopardize the life of another. In a miserable state of anxiety and desperation, he ran along the beach in the heat of the summer sun. Arriving at Porto Ercole, he collapsed and was seized by a malignant fever that killed him in a few days, at about forty years of age.'

Derek Jarman, famous for such controversial films as Sebastiane, Jubilee and The Tempest, worked for more than seven years to realize his most ambitious project: a feature film based on the life and work of Caravaggio, the greatest Italian post-Renaissance painter. Caravaggio (1571-1610) was ihe enfant terrible oi Italian art and his short life, marked by extremes of passion and moral and artistic radicalism, ended violently. The making of this extraordinary film has been recreated here by Derek Jarman himself, and Gerald Incandela has interpreted it in stunning photographs taken throughout the filming.
