Hilary Craven has lost all faith in life, but when she is asked to try to trace a vanished nuclear scientist by impersonating his dead wife she feels it would be a more exciting form of suicide than an overdose of . sleeping pills.

A faked air-crash," a string of radio-active pearls and the authentic background of Morocco and the mysterious East are some of the ingredients of this ingenious, pulse-pounding thriller with an astonishing climax-
Agatha Christie was born in Devonshire, the second daughter of an American father (who died when she was small) and an English mother. She led a very happy, sheltered life, but, as she makes one of her characters remark, " Life was unendurably dull for her—dull and safe. Her| nature demanded drama." In 1916 her elder sister changed the whole course of her life by saying suddenly, " I bet you can't write a good detective story." No more useful suggestion could have been made to an authoress who was hungry for drama. She was working in a dispensary at the time, and there she gained a great deal of useful information about • the effects of different poisons. She took one of the Belgian refugees working nearby as a model for her detective, Hercule Poirot, and settled down for the first time to the job of making death as lively as possible. Since then she has never looked back.
