A PANORAMA of a living poetry - one with traditions we trace back to the thirteenth century. A living poetry showing all signs of life: an organic development, a continuity in changing conditions, constandy shifting trends and finding new answers to the variable challenges of existence and fate.
A PANORAMA of living poets - more than eighty of them. Poets living, thriving and suffering, changing and persevering and meeting various challenges themselves. Living — with the honourable exception of the late Keresztury, who died after the close of the manuscript at the age of ninety-two. The oldest poets in our collection are in their eighties, while at the other end of the scale are those hardly past twenty-five. We tend to think nowadays that five-and-twenty is a somewhat tender age, but we must bear in mind that Keats, of England, and Petőfi, of Hungary, were no older than that when they died and left astounding oeuvres to posterity.

A PANORAMA of themes, attitudes, obsessions, credos, personalities and styles — in a variety which is more conspicuous in the Hungarian poetry of our days than it has ever been during its long history.
A PANORAMA of scenes — because our anthology comprises not only those poets who live within the actual boundaries of Hungary, but also those living in the neighbouring lands, as well as poets of the large diaspora in the Western world and write in the Hungarian tongue.
The selection and translation are done by István TÓTFALUSI, who has already proved his ability of rendering Hungarian verse in English in a row of bilingual volumes of classical poets, published by MAECENAS. Vissza
