This text provides a comprehensive treatment of the direct current (d.c.) machine in its many forms. It bridges the gap between the traditional flux-based approach and modern circuit-based models, and explains the relationship between the two. Considerable attention is given to the performance of motors fed from alternating current supplies through converters. Motors for use in control systems are described in somé detail, together with the features of such special machines and devices as clutches and brakes, linear, homopolar and heteropolar machines, superconductivity in d.c. machines, and eddy-current devices. The final chapter deals with typical constructional features and the basics of design. This second edition has been revised and ninety-four problems, with answers, have been added. A companion volume, Alternating Current Machines, is available.
