NICHOLAS RESCHER
Professor Rescher here investigates one philosophical doctrine for the distribution of goods, that of utilitarianism. Appealing though it sounds, the classic principle of utility — the good things of this life should be distributed according to the rule of "the greatest good of the greatest number"—is found inadequate in various fundamental respects. Through this penetrating critique of one theory, the author brings out the complexity and inherent sophistication of the concept of distributive justice. He goes on to argue for a theory of claims, to be coordinated with the principle of utility, to effect just distribution.
