Doing the Voices A group of schoolchildren playing aduit games in wartime Wales; a near-blind old poet nursing a mad obsession in a Soho attic; a politically minded actress taking part in a transformation scene at a tiny circus; and an ex-clown trying to play it straight at a phoney stately home - these are the highly various, seemingly unconnected cores of the four long stories - one of them almost a short növel - in this volume. What unites them is that in each a personal value is brought unexpectedly into sharp focus, illuminating not only the characters involved but the societies in which they have their being. "Mr Brooks condenses into thirty short pages meat fit for a növel" The Times Literarj Supplement wrote of an earlier story; the same could be said of all four of these. And here again is that "flavour indescribably mixed, strong, attractive and alarming" that the Sunday Telegraph found in Jeremy Brooks's last növel, Smith, as Hero.
