In August 1984, the well-preserved body of a man was accidentallv unearthed from a peat bog at Lindow Moss, Cheshire. Who was he? When and how did he die? What was his last meal? Could he have been the victim of a complex ritual murder? Don Brothwell
telis the exciting story of the discovery of the body and its investigation by a multidisciplinary team of scientists intent on answering these and many other questions. He alsó looks at Lindow Man in the light of worldwide research on preserved people, including other European bog bodies, Egyptian and Guanche mummies, Peruvian dried bodies, Scythian frozen bodies
and the remarkable ancient cadavers of China. This 'forensic archaeology' makes fascinating reading, with all the ingredients of modern crime investigation.
Don Brothwell, Reader in Zooarchaeology at the Institute of Archaeology, University of London, was the biological adviser in the Lindow Man investigation.
