The modern world presents a bewildering array of complex problems in the areas of control
of pollution, earthquake engineering, oceanography, bioengineering, numerical weather fore-
casting, transportation, artificial intelligence, and econometrics. These are emerging branches
of physical science, technology, and social science. At the same time, striking advances are
occurring in computer hardware and in computer software. The harnessing of these vast
capabilities to solve problems in the aforementioned areas is the special province of this
series. The series will be of interest to those active in applied mathematics, engineering, and
operations analysis.

Discrete Models
Donald Greenspan was granted a PH.D. from the University of Maryland and is currently af-
filiated as Professor with the Department of Computer Sciences and Madison Academic Com-
puting Center at the University of Wisconsin. Author of seven books, numerous research pub
lications, and a member of the American Mathematical Society, the Mathematical Associa-
tion of America, the American Physical Society, the Association of Computing Machinery,
Dr. Greenspan is listed in "Who's Who in America/' and has been invited to lecture interna-
tionally.
Discrete Models shows how to solve constructively exceptionally difficult physical problems
using only arithmetic and high school algebra. The power of calculus is replaced by the pow-
er to do arithmetic at high speeds, which is a prime capability of modern digital computers.
Moreover, the problems solved are of wide interest and cannot be solved by classical mathe-
matical methods.
