Doris Ady was born in Burma, of Dutch Burgher (Ceylon) parents. She was educated in England and Switzerland, returned to Burma in 1938, and in 1941 her gay social life was suddenly disrupted by poliomyelitis. In 1942 she escaped with her parents by the hard land track to India when the Japanese occupied Rangoon.
In 1944 she married and in 1946 returned with her husband and baby daughter to business in Burma. In 1956 they met an Australian businessman who suggested that they should think of settling in Sydney and they made the move the same year.
She soon discovered that Australians were fascinated by her knowledge of curries, and the family are now in business as importers of, and experts in. Oriental spices and other foodstuffs.
Mrs Ady knows every aspect of her subject and she writes of it with full understanding of the Australian and New Zealand conditions to which her book is adapted.
