Dorothy Parker is one of the many clever young authors who have started their literary careers on the staff of that witty and sophisticated weekly The New Yorker. She grew popular as a writer of satirical and whimsical verses but soon turned to prose, where the short and pointed novelette became her favourite medium. On "Laments for the Living" followed in 1933 After Such Pleasures, her most popular book up to now.
