In 1980, ThefymcetmáeúookpxMcdr tion of a ^es of artides by Professor Lionel Opie entitled "Drugs and The Heart" in order to "stimulate tiie critical approach to cardiovascular pharmacology that will be much needed in the coming decade." Interest in the series led to appearance of a book which the Journal of the Royal Society of Medicine felt should be "recommended as a standard handbook for all doctors treating the cardiac patient and should be available in every cpronary unit and cardiac department." Subsequentiy, Dutch, French, and Italian ti^slations of Drugs and The Heart appeared. The preparation of a version suitable for
the American practitioner required tiiat the very considerable differences in the therci)eutic agents avail^le for the treatment of cardiac dysfianction in this coun-tS7 be taken into account, as well as the important developments in the field during the intervening three years.
