And this sense of puckish humour pervades the ' portrait'— one of the best examples of 'poetry in prose' in modern literature. Swinburne and Browning wrote this kind of prose, but no poet has ever recaptured the morning light as com-pletely as Thomas; fiction only thinly disguises here what ií was like for Dylan to be a child, a schoolboy and a young man in Wales before he came to London.'
