The album is dedicated to the decorative and applied art of Turkmenia, now one of the USSR's Central Asian republics. It offers a survey of Turkmen árts and crafts from ancient limes to the present day. Among the numerous art objects reproduced in this edition are alsó several extremely rare pieces made by craftsmen of antiquity and discovered 011 the territory of Turkmenia.
Carpet-making, being one of the oldest Turkmen crafts, has been given spécial attention. The jewellery of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the national costume have alsó been treated in detail.
The Turkmen carpets, with their elegant designs, brilliant colours and superb technique, have won a world-wide fame. The Turkmen silver ornaments, often gilt and inlaid with cornelian or coloured glass, have always been and still are an integrál part of the national costume.
