The fall of Napoleon ushered in a period of prolonged peace on the Continent, and the principal states of Europe turned their attention inward. In France, in Prussia, in the Balkans, and among the Italian principalities, momentum was developed toward material growth, industrial progress, and nationalism. It was a time of ideological ferment and internal explosions. In this well-known study, a noted English historian analyzes and appraises the century which led to two world wars and other convulsions of our own age.
Abandoning the traditional method of writing European history from the standpoint of international politics, Mr. Lipson treats each country as a separate entity, with due regard to those forces which affected them collectively. The result is an unusually concise, analytical account of what happened between Waterloo and Sarajevo.
