In this book the author presents to the reader one of the most splendid periods in the history of painting. Italian I4th and early 15th century works of art have a particular fascination for all art enthusiasts. The huge works executed for the churches and municipal bodies of Florence, Siena and Assisi gave rise to the first great flowering of Italian painting, which led to the Early Italian Renaissance. Few European museums can pride themselves on such a rich and valuable collection of early Italian paintings as those preserved in the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts and the Esztergom Christian Museum. The selection, reproduced for the first time in this book, has been compiled from the finest panels and altarpieces in these galleries and includes, among others, somé of the less widely known pictures of such eminent masters as Maso di Banco, Taddeo Gaddi, Duccio, Ambrogio Lorenzetti, Jacopo di Cione, Spinello Aretino, and Taddeo di Bartolo.
