Late in 1888, only weeks before his connplete mental collapse. Nietzsche set out 'with a cynicism which will become world-historic' to narrate his own story. The result was Ecce Homo : one of the most beautifully written books in German, Nietzsche's last work, and, in every way, his last testament.
As well as being an autobiography, Ecce Homo is an invaluable summary of the^work and conflicts of Nietzsche's life. It is a final statement of his position as philosopher, psychologist and Anti-Christ; it is a proclamation of the coming revaluation of all standards; and it sets the tragic philosophy of life and the Christian religion in uncompromising opposition to one another. Upon these elements there is laid a particular and peculiar pathos - the pathos of absolute affirmation - which gives this book a tone unique even within the corpus of Nietzsche's own writings.
