To cover, in outline, the economic and social evolution of England during the past two thousand years in a short space is a difficult task, especially if one wishes to use the results of recent research to correct or modify the ingrown generalisations of text-book writers. However, that is what has been attempted here. The subject-matter has been divided up into major sections and generál argument has been allowed to prevail over mere descriptive detail. Whenever space has allowed, social changes have alsó been briefly indicated. If a student is to "teach himself," he must read and critically compare the accounts and arguments.
