Her oval face was beautiful in the extreme,
her every feature finely chiseled and ex-

head surmounted by a mass of coal black,

Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars is one of the
most thoroughly conceived and carefully
described worlds in the annals of science
fiction. No detail of its chemistry or geog-

missing from the master storyteller's mar-

Edgar Rice Burroughs' Mars is one of the
most thoroughly conceived and carefully
described worlds in the annals of science
fiction. No detail of its chemistry or geog-
raphy is overlooked; no aspect of the crea-
tures who seethe across its plains is
missing from the master storyteller's mar-
velous narrative.
A PRINCESS OF MARS is the first of
eleven thrilling novels which comprise
Edgar Rice Burroughs' most exciting saga,
known as the Martian Series. It's the be-
ginning of an incredible odyssey in which
John Carter, a gentleman from Virginia,
embarks on a daring journey to the dying
red planet—threatened with dispersion of
its weak atmosphere—scene of continuing
combat among rival tribes.
Captured by a band of six-limbed, sav-
age giants, Carter is at first dismayed by
the sensational presence of these seem-
ingly emotionless warriors and their fan-
tastic mounts. But he soon earns the
respect of his captors in hand-to-hand
combat, after discovering that his mus-
cles, accustomed to Earth's gravity, give
him a decided advantage in strength and
agility. (continued on back flap)
(continued from front flap)
Accorded all the honor of a chieftain be-
cause of his prowess, Carter nevertheless
remains a prisoner of the green warriors
. . . but then, suddenly, he finds himself
deeply involved in a bitter rivalry as his
captors demolish a fleet of stately airborne
vessels and take as prisoner the lovely
Princess of the city of Helium—a creature
as completely human in appearance and
temperament as the most beautiful women
the state of Virginia ever produced!
To rescue Dejah Thoris, Princess of He-
lium, John Carter would have to call upon
every last ounce of his courage, strength
and ingenuity. And, should he fail, his
beautiful Princess would suffer an un-
speakable fate at the hands of Tal Hajus,
the green warriors' depraved ruler.
EDGAR RICE BURROUGHS wrote in the
grand tradition of Jules Verne, H. G. Wells
and other spinners of fantastic and won-
derful tales. Perhaps best known for his
Tarzan series, Burroughs' most sensational
yarns by far were the marvelous stories he
told in the Martian Series and other endur-
ing works of science fiction.
FRANK FRAZETTA, the noted illustrator
whose work has long been well known
and well appreciated by Burroughs' fans,
did the cover painting and interior draw-
ings for this special edition of A PRIN-
CESS OF MARS on commission from the
Science Fiction Book Club. Vissza
