The Influence of Rome's Antique Monumental Sculptures on the Great Masters of the Renaissance
The author breaks fresh ground in analyzing the relationship between antique and Renaissance art. She shows the influence of the antique statues, found in Rome at the time of the Renaissance, on the development of the art of that period. She shows that Rome's antique statues had a considerably greater influence on the development of Renaissance art than hitherto believed. Leonardo's relationship to antique art has so far been only related back to sarcophagus reliefs, but the author now shows the direct influence of antique free standing statues on his work, indeed, the first appearance of one antique statue as a prototype for Renaissance art seems directly related to Leonardo's art. The form analysis of the work sheds light on the creative methods of Michelangelo and Leonardo, the artistic attitude of the two, the means they use in synthesizing the prototypes in their work, and problems of dating. With the concrete and detailed analysis of the motif-history problems and the showing of the new form and content relationships, the study makes a contribution to the reconstruction of the influence factors and creative methods of Renaissance art.
