TRAGIC VICTORIES
Edward Jablonski
This second of a four volume illustrated history of the great air battles of World War II, collectively titled Airwar, is a graphic account of the early progress of the global conflict, from the confused months of 1941-2 when the Axis powers appeared everywhere invincible to the crucial Battle of Midway that marked a major turning point in the tide of war.
Opening with a fascinating description of the attack on Pearl Harbor, one of history's most decisive air victories, Tragic Victories traces the incredible sacrifice of lives and material that was the price of each side's determination to press on to victory at all costs. It was the beginning of the Japanese conquest of Asia, and the record of that hard-fought campaign is high-lighted by the heroic stories of the "Flying Tigers" and Doolittle's daring raid on Tokyo launched from the aircraft carrier Hornet.

In the European theatre the United States began a massive air assault against Hitler's war machine, and this volume vividly recounts those early efforts which included the gallant but costly raids onPloesti and Schweinfurt. Here too are the details of the RAF's 1000 bomber raid on Cologne and their successful attempts to blow up the dams of the Ruhr River.

Complementing the narrative are over 200 action photographs—many never before published—which the author has gathered from personal collections and official archives in Europe, Asia and the United States. Together pictures and words present a dramatic epic of millions of men and women caught up by the sweep of history in a world-wide struggle, and of the heroic and often tragic exploits that brought about its resolution.

Edward Jablonski acquired his passion for airplanes as a boy in Bay City, Michigan, and despite a stint in the artillery during the war, this interest continued unabated. He is a member of the Society, of World War I Aero Historians and the American Aviation Historical Society, and is the author of Flying Fortress and several other books on the history of aviation.
