In Japanese, there are many words which appear to mean the same thing but are actually quite different.
For example, although the words utsukushii and kirei are both translated as 'beautiful' in English, there are slight differences in usage between them. Depending on the circumstances, these differences may give rise to a situation in which although the usage is slightly incorrect, it is permissible, or if the usage is slightly incorrect, the meaning changes entirely. For this reason we have created this dictionary, which we hope will help students of Japanese to learn a variety of expressions and to use them correctly.
This dictionary was primarily created for persons who want to learn Japanese. We believe, however, that it will also be useful to anyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of the language, including Japanese language educators and students who are Japanese natives.
302 entries containing 708 headwords were chosen from among those terms that students have shown to have had difficulty using correctly. Each entry contains an easy-to-understand definition and explanation in Japanese, with illustrations often complementing the entries. For convenience of self study, furigana is provided for all kanji characters, and each example sentence is accompanied by a romanized version. Furigana is printed below each kanji character so that the reader may be able to improve his or her kanji proficiency by masking the furigana with a piece of paper while reading. English translations are provided to aid in comparison between the two languages. Moreover, each entry is designated with one of nine symbols for quick recognition of its Vissza
