DICTIONARY OF NON-CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY
By Egerton'-Sykes
The important discoveries which have been made in the Bible Lands during the last few years, of which the Dead Sea Scrolls are an example, have reminded the reading public that there were numerous cultures flourishing long before Homer composed his first epic. The records of these cultures are of considerable importance in assessing the interlocking religious, political and economic motifs which linked many of them together. Magic and witchcraft, giants, goblins and dwarfs, all merge into the general background of history; the miraculous becomes something which the narrator was too immature or too ignorant to understand in its true context; the sailor's yarn falls into the same category as the fisherman's story, something based on truth but stretched in the telling. This book omits the fantastic and the totally incredible, and presents the material in its true perspective, so far as present knowledge will allow.... Tovább

This book omits the fantastic and the totally incredible, and presents the material in its true perspective, so far as present knowledge will allow.
This new edition of Everyman's Dictionary of Non-classical Mythology has been thoroughly revised and brought up to date by Egerton Sykes, and thirty articles have been added in the form of an appendix, which is alphabetized independently of the body of the work. These take into account recent developments in scholarship and in the contemporary world, and include such subjects of topical interest as the Abominable Snowman and Tibetan Lamaism. Omissions, notably that of the legendary Irish voyagers St Brandan, Corra and Maeldune, have also been repaired.
The material is arranged in alphabetical sequence, covering the mythological figures of the Near East; Europe (including legends of the Celts, Teutons, Slavs and Basques); India and Persia; America both North and South; Australasia and Indonesia; China and Japan; and Africa.
