This is a companion volume to Eighteenth Century Comedy edited by W. D. Taylor (World's Classics No. 292), and contains George Lille's The London Merchant, Samuel Johnson's Irene, Edward Moore's The Gamester, John Home's Douglas, and The Iron Chest by George Colman the younger. Except for Dr. Johnson's Irene, which was a failure but has a special interest because of its authorship, these plays were immensely popular and remained stock pieces until the second half of the nineteenth century. The great actors—Kemble, Mrs. Siddons, Kean, Macready, Irving—all played in them. Dr. Booth, in his interesting and judicious introduction, is not concerned to give them a higher place than they deserve in an age noted for its comedy, but he believes that they represent the most significant achievements of eighteenth-century tragic dramatists and that their long survival on the stage indicates that they possessed notable theatrical values.
