This textbook provides an introduction to chemical thermodynamics for geology undergraduates and graduate students with little experience in thermodynamic methods. It avoids an abstract development of the subject, illustrating instead the usefulness of the thermodynamic approach to geological problems by means of examples based on natural rock systems. The authors have dispensed with the usual formal statements and proofs which can be found in classical thermodynamics textbooks because many geologists find it difficult to see the relevance of these to their own problems. Instead, they begin by introducing the concept of chemical potential as a means of predicting the stability of mineral components, and then use it to examine a simple equilibrium of geological interest. This approach is developed in subsequent chapters by showing how chemical potentials change with temperature, pressure, and composition. These changes are then used to calculate the response of various mineral... Tovább

These changes are then used to calculate the response of various mineral equilibria to changing T^P conditions within the Earth.
Each chapter contains worked examples and problems with solutions.
