The JatakaTales, or "birth stories "are an ancient compendium of legends concerning somé previous incarnations of the Buddha. Most famous and best loved are the last ten Jatakas, which are retold here in a lively narrative style recreating the vibrant world of myth and legend that is such a colorful and fascinating component of Buddhist traditional culture. Each of the ten tales is an allegory of one of the ten cardinal virtues to be perfected in attaining Buddhahood: renunciation, courage, kindness, resolution, wisdom, perseverance, forbearance, equanimity, truthfulness, and charity. The JatakaTales have been the inspiration for great art throughout Asia for two thousand years. Nowhere is this more evident than inThailand, where anonymous artists depicted the Jatakas in gemlike murals that transformed the walls of Buddhist temples into a blaze of glowing color.
