THE PESICM PROCESS
CASE STUDIES IN PROJECT DEVELOPMENT ¦ ELLEN SHOSHKES
There is mucli curiosity about tiie design process—how a design evolves. While architecture and design students are familiar with the classic project phases, in reality few projects follow such a strict progression. Certain constraints—such as site, client, and mandate—dictate the design direction. Other, often less predictable elements affect the evolution of the design. Reviews by committees, governmental agencies, and concerned citizen groups can dramatically alter an architects plans. Similarly, the clients' and users' reactions to the design will affect its development. In the past few years, as projects have become increasingly complex, more and more architects and designers have come to realize just how important the process is to the final design.

Which factors contribute to successful projects—those that satisfy the needs of the client, the community, and the designer? How do creative ideas survive the process of give and take and the maze of constraints that tends to reinforce conventional design solutions? Using real-life cases of nine innovative projects by well-known architects and planners, The Design Process answers these questions by showing how a design progresses from idea to reality Projects range from individual buildings—such as Susana Torre's Firestation Five in Columbus, Indiana—to large-scale development, such as Andres Duany and Elizabeth Plater-• Zyberk's new town plan for Kentlands in Gaithersburg, Maryland. In following these case studies, the reader becomes aware of the different directions the design process can take—and learns how a client or architect can actually design the process itself to result in a better project.
The nine projects profiled in this book are exceptional, but not unique. They provide a window onto issues that are faced by many firms in similar situations, enabling generalizations to be made by comparing the particular lessons in each case. Design is decision making, and the key to successful projects lies not only in the final form but in the process leading up to it. An understanding of what takes place during a project and why will help demystify design and provide a shared vocabulary for clients, designers, and other participants in the design process.
