Előszó

1801 -1 have just returned from a visit to my landlord, the only neighbour that I shall have. This is certainly a beautiful country! I do not believe that there could be a lonelier place in all England. It is perfectly suited to Mr Heathcliff and myself. He is a fine fellow! I began to like him as soon as I saw his suspicious, unfriendly face at the door. 'Mr Heathcliff?' I said. 'Yes.' 'Mr Lockwood, your new tenant, sir. I hope that I have not caused you any trouble by moving into Thrushcross Grange.' Thrushcross Grange is mine, sir. I don't allow anyone to cause me trouble if I can stop them. Come in!' It was obvious that he did not want me to go in, but I accepted the invitation. The man had begun to interest me. Mr Heathcliff's house is called Wuthering Heights. 'Wuthering' is a local word that describes the terrible wildness of the place in stormy weather. Happily, it had been well built. Above the front door I noticed the date '1500' and the name 'Hareton Earnshaw' written in the wall. I would have asked the owner about them but he had already gone inside. I followed him into an ordinary looking sitting-room. Several^dogs lay on the floor beside a huge fire-place. Through another door I heard the sound of voices and the usual kitchen noises. However, Mr Heathcliff himself is unusual. He is very dark and looks rather foreign. He is a gentleman, and one who does not worry about his appearance. Yet a lazy manner somehow suits this sulién, good-looking man. I sat down near the fire while Mr Heathcliff went to get somé wine. Three of the dogs nowgot up and watched everymove I made. I amused myself by making odd faces at them. Unfortunately, Vissza
