To the villagers of Amherst, she was an eccentric recluse, who, in her later years, always wore white and never went out of her father's house. It was not until after her death in 1886 that her family discovered that she had written over seventeen hundred poems. She called these poems her "letter to the world" and quietly dedicated her life to writing them. It is amazing that one so sheltered in her own priváté world could write about the universal themes of life, love, nature, and immortality, and do so with such originality that her poems still impress us with their freshness and vigor. She experimented with rhyme and rhythm and made every word count. Although her constant companions were hills, flowers, and sunsets, she did have a few humán friends.
