Tradition and innovation in american free verse: Whitman to Duncan
There are a few black holes at the outer limits of literary scholarship which attract critics with some mysterious magnetism yet give a hard time to those who attempt penetration. Free verse is one of them. Eniko Bollobas set herself the ambitious task of bringing free verse out of its mysterious black hole. By means of her framing hypothesis, grammetrics, and her many analytical interludes and examples, she proves that free verse is not a specimen of anti-poetry, a breed of literary counter-culture, but a natural child of modern poetry.
Re-writing 130 years of American poetic history, the author examines the prosodic achievements of Walt Whitman, T. S. Eliot, the Pound-Williams modernism and the post-modernism of the Black Mountain poets. Prosodic avant-gardism is studied here in its continuity from Whitman to our contemporaries and is thus proved to be a major, if not the major achievement of modern poetry.
