A distinguished Swedish historian, Dr. Ingvar Andersson, contributes a brief history of the country to give the reader his bearings in time, and the author provides, not only a description of the route itself and of its two terminal cities, Gothenburg and Stockholm, but also the story of the building of this remarkable waterway, in which the great British engineer, Thomas Telford, was involved. As the author explains in his introduction: "This book is about one of Europe's major navigations, but, as its title indicates, the guide is intended to be more than a description of the Göta Canal route itself.
