INSIGHT AND RESPONSIBILITY
Lectures on the Ethical Implications of Psychoanalytic Insight
BY ERIK H. ERIKSON Author of Childhood and Society and Young Man Luther
In this collection of six lectures, Erik H. Erikson discusses the ethical implications of psychoanalytic insight and the responsibilities that each generation of men has for all succeeding generations. With the same clarity and originality that characterize Childhood and Society and Young Man Luther, he explains the concepts that have guided him as an analyst, teacher and research clinician. His wide range of subjects includes a re-examination of Freud's early work and an inquiry into the nature of clinical evidence.
He discusses the ego's manifold impairment by inner conflict and by geographical uprootedness; and on the basis of his study of the human life cycle, he postulates the basic strengths as well as the malignant weaknesses that are transmitted from generation to generation. Thus, a conceptual bridge is built from the psychoanalytic contemplation of reality to that of historical actuality. And finally, Erikson amends the age-old golden rule in the light of clinical insight. In all of the lectures that make up the book, he again illuminates ideas and areas of thought in an important contribution to our understanding of human behavior.
The Author
ERIK H. ERIKSON is one of the leading figures in the field of psychoanalysis and human development. His clinical practice has included the treatment of children, and he has studied the process of growing up in a variety of cultural and social settings. He has also been a training analyst for many years. For more than a decade, he was on the Senior Staff of the Austen Riggs Center, and he has participated in the researches of the Harvard Psychological Clinic, the Yale Institute of Human Relations, the Institute of Child Welfare at the University of California, and the Western Psychiatric Institute in Pittsburgh. He is now Professor of Human Development and Lecturer on Psychiatry at Harvard. Professor Erikson's earlier books, Childhood and Society and Young Man Luther, are also available in Norton paperbound editions. Vissza
