The Hungárián National Archives building was designed in 1913 by an experienced international architect, Samu Pecz (1854-1922). Work began in the First World War and decoration followed in the post-war years. The building is a splendid example of how to match past styles with present requirements. The frescoes inside, painted by Andor Dudits (1866-1944) in 1925-9, show the finest hours in Hungárián history-viewing them gives a sense of the achievements of Hungary's history. The stained-glass windows, designed and made by Miksa Róth (1865-1944), show coloured coats of arms of the main cities of preFirst World War Hungary. Róth alsó designed the wall decorations and unmistakable fúrniture. The building was badly damaged in 1945. The Research Room interior was lost and so was a controversial tower to be seen in the designs. The Research Room interior was lost and so was a controversial tower to be seen in the designs. In 1956, the building had just been restored inside for the 200th anniversary of the Archives' foundation when further damage was done in the revolution. Many records in the west wing were destroyed. Peremptory orders were given in the 1950s to paint out somé frescoes, despite objections from all respected experts of the day. In the 1980s, the maslced fresco over the stair well was destroyed while the roof was being renovated. But there is still a rare experience ahead for those entering the Hungárián National Archives today. The nation's memories are kept not only in the records found there, but in a pictorial pageant inside the palatial building. Vissza
