The American South
The American South is a collection of 20 papers
and two conversations on the culture and literature
of what is perhaps intellectually the most enigmatic
and least accessible region of the United States., the
American South. Although there is no attempt to
present a complete, thoroughgoing analysis of the
South today, the various contributors have sought
to observe the South and its culture from various
perspectives and to look in particular at its literature,
as it has been and as it has developed in the twentieth
century. As might be expected in a work of many
authors, this is an idiosyncratic, even eccentric and
impressionistic work with no unity of viewpoint. In
the words of its editor, Louis D. Rubin, Jr., Emeritus
Professor of English at the University of North
Carolina: "If there is one theme that emerges ,
it seems to be that of endurance. The South has
changed and is changing all the time, both for good
