About the author:
Eugene Greeley Prater is a native to Oklahoma and Colorado. He gradu-
ated from Phillips University in philosophy and religion and studied drama
for two years at the University of Oklahoma. Subsequently, he graduated
from the Vanderbilt Divinity School and was winner of the Elliot F.
Shepherd prize in church history; also, on a Carnegie Foundation Grant,
he obtained a M. A. in English literature from Vanderbilt University. On
scholarship, he studied religion and philosophy at Harvard. He served as
pastor of Christian and Congregational Churches in Texas, Oklahoma,
Kentucky, Tennessee, and New Jersey. In the Eisenhower-Kennedy era,
he was an administrative assistant in the Department of Interior and re-
searcher in the Library of Congress in Washington, D. C. and studied U. S. political, economic, and

theatre as well as communications and U. S. history. His essay on "Key Philological Terms in Brecht's
Aesthetics of the Theatre" was awarded a national prize by the American Theatre Association at their
convention in Los Angeles. He has served in the departments of history at Ball State University, Cal
State at Long Beach, and the University of San Francisco. He has served on the English Department
faculties at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and Cal Poly, Pomona, Southern California, Curry College in
Boston, University of Maine at Machias, and Chemeketa College in Oregon. He was a lecturer in
dramatic literature at the University of Southern California. For a period of ten years he taught speech,
English, German, English as a Second Language in Europe and the Middle East, especially as Chair-
man of Languages at Wittenberg College in Düsseldorf and as lecturer at Schiller International Uni-
versity in Heidelberg, as well as Professor of English Literature at King Abdulaziz University in
Jiddah, Saudi Arabia. He taught some eighty-eight courses for the overseas program of the University
of Maryland in Iceland, Sardinia, Italy, and Germany. He received a certificate in German from Munich
University in 1970 and studied Swedish at Stockholm University where, in 1977, he was guest lecturer
in the seminar of Professor Kirsten Gram Holmström. Recently he taught ESL to Mexicans at Ventura
College in California and to Puerto Ricans and Haitians at the Universidad de Interamericana in San
Germán, Puerto Rico. He is a member of Pi Gamma Mu (honorary fraternity in social science) and Phi
Alpha Theta (honorary fraternity in history). From 1954 to 1966 he was a reserve U. S. Naval Chap-
lain, Lt.j.g. In 1993 Pine Hill Press published his book, An Existential View of John Osborne. His
recent book, Essays on Drama and Theatre: 2000 A.D., appeared in 1994. Also, Bishop Alexander
Payne of African Methodism, was published from Der Prater am Wien Press in Budapest, Hungary, in
1998.1999-2000 marked the publication of a biography, John Winthrop, Puritan and Newtonian Scien-
tist: 1714-1779. Rachel and the Star System appeared in 2000; Imanu Baraka 's (Leroy Jones) Drama-
turgy of Revolution came, also, in 2000.
