Eugéne lonesco Fifteen years ago the plays of lonesco, a Rumanian by origin, were being acted in Left Bank theatres in Paris and very poorly attended Now regarded as one of the most important writers of the avantgarde, he has a world-wide reputation and his plays are translated from the originál French into many languages. Sir Laurence Olivier took the leading part in Rhinoceros when it was produced in London in 1960 at the Royal Court Theatre, where The Chairs had already been performed in 1957. The Lesson was produced at London's Arts Theatre Club in 1955. lonesco himself is hesitant to theorize about his work or assess its importance. His plays represent, he says, 'a mood and not an ideology, an impulse not a programme'. The substance of the world seems to vary, for him, between solidity and illusory unreality and he projects on to the stage, with a strangely universal effect of comedy, his own internál conflict.
