EUROPE IN THE HIGH MIDDLE AGES 1150-1309 Second Edition
This is the ninth volume to be published in the ongoing revision of Longman's celebrated General History of Europe, a standard introduction to the history of Europe for the student and general reader. Like the titles already republished, Professor Mundy's book has been revised and updated, with a completely new bibliography, and the whole has been redesigned and reset. When complete^ the updated series - which covers European history from the late classical world to the present - will contain twelve volumes, three of them entirely new.
Europe in the High Middle Ages is one of the most original and personal volumes in the set. Rather than pursue a chronological narrative of events, Professor Mundy has instead provided a vivid portrait of the social, economic, political and intellectual life of Latin Christendom in the period. His formidable knowledge of the contemporary sources is a particular strength of the book: wherever possible the men and women of the high middle ages are allowed to speak for themselves, commenting on the aims, achievements and shortcomings of themselves and their times in a way that makes their distant lives as complex and immediate as our own today. Another attraction of the book is the attention devoted to aspects of the period that are traditionally marginalised in surveys of this sort - to the history of women, for instance, and to the place of the Jews in a predominantly Christian society.
The original version of the book was almost too rich and too detailed for its purpose. The Second Edition, therefore, as well as being updated and revised (and in parts rewritten and expanded), has also been pruned back. If admirers of the original may occasionally regret the loss of a favourite quote here or a lively aside there, new readers can be assured that a wealth of others remain - and its more manageable dimensions, and more up-to-date scholarship, will win the Second Edition a new generation of friends.
7i is noteworthy both for its originality and the erudition it displays In short this is a book which will be read by many with profit and enjoyment, especially because of the individual manner in which the author has seized a fortunate opportunity.'
Times Literary Supplement (of the First Edition)
' . . . his book should properly be regarded as a description and analysis of the society of western Europe in the 12th and 13th centuries. Judged from this point of view, it is very good indeed.'
Colin Morris, English Historical Review (of the First Edition)
John H. Mundy is Professor Emeritus at Columbia University, Nei York, where he was Professor of Medieval History from 1962 until his retireibent in 1987.
