PREFACE
This volume is the result of a close co-operation between Soviet and Hungarian scholars, under the auspices of the Gorky Institute of World Literature of Moscow and the Literary Research Institute of Budapest.
Romanticism and its literature have been brought here into the compass of a broad all-European relationship. A comparative research into a material including the literatures of several peoples raises the question if romantic art did not follow certain general rules for its development while individual romanticisms chose to follow different paths determined by specific social and cultural factors in the literatures of various peoples. We did not fail to devote adequate attention to problems of periodization in romantic literatures, to basic literary genres and to various trends in style. International literary connections within the period under discussion have also been taken into account.
The authors who contributed to this volume tried to bring into focus the specific relationship and interaction between romanticism and realism both in the general perspective of the development of European art and in individual European literatures.
The studies in this volume did not isolate romantic literature from the other arts : literary problems have been studied in close touch with music and the fine arts.
M. Szenczi Vissza

European Romanticism
Edited by I. Soter and I. Neupokoyeva
This anthology by leading Soviet and Hungarian scholars is an attempt to examine romanticism as a "European" movement in the broadest geographical sense of the term. It sets out to trace in what is particular to, say, English, Georgian, Norwegian or Italian literature, art and music those common threads in virtue of which we yet call them all "romantic".
The two introductory studies by the editors, I. S6'ter and I. Neupokoyeva, delimit and specify the concept of romanticism: the former, by tracing its antecedents and demarcating its phases; the latter, by relating its unique variants to the movement as a whole. The bulk of the work contains studies on the major romantic genres; while the last group of studies relates romantic literature to the other contemporary art forms.
European Romanticism — broad in scope, diversified in approach, primarily comparative and typological in intent — is a richly rewarding volume. It... Tovább
