name Sarlós) was born in Hungary and grew up in several countries of Europe where she earned a German Abitur and a Diploma in Hungarian from the Sorbonne. Her M.A and Ph.D. degrees are from Columbia University As professor of French and German she taught at Barnard College, Douglass

College and Mills College and held visiting professor positions at Reed College and the University of Washington before joining the faculty of the United States Naval Academy for seventeen years which she also represented as exchange lecturer for a year at the Britannia Royal Naval College in Dartmouth^ England. She spent a sabbatical leave as visiting research professor at Harvard University. Her research and publications are in contemporary theory and criticism with a special interest in György Lukács whose work she discussed in two books. Her other publications appeared in Diacritics, Sub-Stance, French Review, New German Critiijue, Slavic Review, PPiibsofhy and Literature, Comparative Literature, University of Ottawa Quarterly, Etudes francophones and Tracing Literary Theory. Among her awards are Paul Harris Fellow^ Excellence in Research Award and Meritorious Civilian Service Award from the USNA.
She makes her home in the United States, near New York City, but spends several months a year in Paris, France.
