It seems remarkable now that the Cambridge Review had to go outside Cambridge to find a reviewer for New Bearings in English Poetry when it was first published in 1932. For Dr Leavis's estimate of Eliot, Pound, and Hopkins - which seemed so controversial at the time - has since been widely accepted in its general outlines. Many people, therefore, will want to possess one of the major works of modern criticism, a pioneer appreciation of poems like The Waste Land and Hugh Selwyn Mauberley when they were still being widely denounced as obscure, unpoetic nonsense. And for younger people, who may be approaching Hopkins, Eliot, and Pound for the first time, New Bearings provides a helpful introduction to these major poets and an appraisal of their originality and vitality in comparison with the late Victorians and Georgians.
