X he audience sees the concert world as formal, ritualistic, and traditional—white-tied and tailed performers politely applauded while critics criticize critically. But it looks different to the men who play great music. They know what really happens out on the stage, and they also know what goes on backstage in the greenrooms, upstairs at the managers' offices, and offstage in musicians' homes when they gather to reminisce and entertain each other.
Henri Temianka has performed in all parts of the concert world for forty years. He knows its every nook and cranny, and he knows the real human beings the public knows only as famous virtuosos. In Facing the Music he tells it all, spilling the beans on soloists, conductors, critics, composers, instrument dealers, teachers, accompanists—who they are, what they do, what they do not do, and what they hide.
Best of all he talks about his fellow performers: Menuhin the practitioner of Yoga, Heifetz playing second violin, Piatigorsky the beloved, Szell the gourmet, Oistrakh the gourmand, Horowitz the nervous, Rubinstein the generous, Bernstein the agile, and all the others.
Henri Temianka was born in Scotland of Polish parents. He was educated in Holland, studied at the National Conservatories of Berlin and Paris and graduated from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia in 1930 as a violinist and conductor. In the course of a distinguished and versatile international career, he has appeared in almost every world center and at festivals from Edinburgh to Osaka, either as a soloist, conductor or leader of the celebrated Paganini Quartet. Mr. Temianka has made numerous recordings, published articles in such magazines as the Saturday Review, Esquire, Holiday, and the Reader's Digest, and is active as lecturer and master teacher at universities here and abroad. He is the founder and conductor of the highly acclaimed California Chamber Symphony. Thomas Mann has written about him in Zur Entstehung des Doktor Faustus.
"This charming, funny, and consistently entertaining memoir of a concert violinist and conductor could be the sleeper of the season A warmhearted virtuoso performance that will make you cry 'bravo'!"
