Elisabeth Wittelsbach, daughter of a Bavarian duke, was born in Munich on December 24"' 1837. She learnt to appreciate the beauty of the natural landscape and the art of horse-riding in the company of her father, Duke Maximilian.
She first met Francis Joseph in Bad Ischl on August 17"', 1853. He betrothed her on August 18'". Their wedding was held on April 1854 in Vienna, with great pageantry. They had four children: the first, Sophie, born in 1855, died in 1857. Gisela was born in 1856, Rudolph in 1858 (he committed suicide in 1889). The eldest, Maria Valerie was born in 1868.
The royal couple first visited Hungary on May 4'", 1857. Elisabeth liked staying in this country, especially in the Grassalkovich Palace in Gödöllő, which was a present of the Hungarian people given to the royal couple on the occasion of their coronation.

On June 8"', 1867, Francis Joseph was crowned king, Elisabeth queen of Hungary, in the Virgin Mary Church in Buda. Hungarians loved their queen very much; they saw her as the all-time defender of Hungarian interests, the guardian angel and the beneficent, protective spirit of their country.
Elisabeth felt ill at ease in the strictly regulated atmosphere of the imperial court. She took refuge in illness, and later turned to incessant travelling. Endless roaming without a definite destination almost became her lifestyle. On September io'h, 1898, she was assassinated by an Italian anarchist near Lake Geneva. She was laid to eternal rest in the crypt of the Viennese Capuchins, the ancestral burial place of the Habsburgs. Vissza
