Four Stories and a Play
The renowned Spanish philosopher Miguel de Unamuno (1864-1936) questioned the traditional theology of the Roman Catholic Church and was once exiled from Spain for his provocative politics. He also rejected the laws that distinguish one literary genre from another. Thus, some of his finest essays are short stories, and vice versa. Included in this volume are four stories—Tía Tula; The Novel of Don Sandalia, Chess Player; The Madness of Doctor Montarco; Saint Manuel Bueno, Martyr—and the play The Other.
Tía Tula ("Aunt Tula") describes the dilemma of the virgin mother caught between duty and fidelity to self. Don Sandalio is the chess player without past or present except as he concentrates on his game. The story-essay of Doctor Montarco contains one of Unamuno's earliest answers to critics who wished to confine him to a party, thereby denying him the freedom to be a whole man.
