Of the world's 4 000 to 4 500 living mammal species, approximately 25 per cent, or some 1 100, occur on the African continent. In Field Guide to the Larger Mammals of Africa, Chris and Tilde Stuart concentrate on the more visible and easily distinguished larger mammal species, as well as on some of the more frequently seen smaller mammals. Chris and Tilde Stuart are the founders of the African Carnivore Research Programme and, more recently, the African-Arabian Wildlife Research Centre. They are involved in various research programmes dealing with carnivores and other vertebrates of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula, and contribute widely to both scientific journals and popular magazines. They are well known for their Field Guide to the Mammals of Southern Africa; Field Guide to the Tracks and Signs of Southern and East African Wildlife', and more recently Africa's Vanishing Wildlife, amongst others.
Tilde was educated in Iran and Austria, receiving a doctorate in medicine from the University of Innsbruck. Chris was educated in England and South Africa, and obtained an M.Sc from the University of Natal. As a member of the international conservation body, the lUCN, he serves in three specialist groups dealing with cats, mustelids and viverrids, and the reintroduction of animals into the wild.
