For centuries the armoured knight was safe in battle from all weapons but the arrow. Black powder was to change all that. First used in China, gunpowder soon reached the West, and in the fourteenth century the first guns were made in Europe. No longer was armour a guaranteed protection; the whol^ nature of warfare, and with it the course of history, was changed. In this book, Frederick Wilkinson traces the development of firearms, from their introduction as crude hand-guns right through to the rapid-firing, self-loading rifle of the modern army. The fine quality colour plates illustrate many of the beautifully made weapons produced by the gunsmiths of the world, including superbly decorated wheel-locks from Germany and chiselled steel pistols from Italy.
